Sewer Pipe Lining in Norfolk: How It Works and When It Helps

Sewer pipe lining can fix issues with your sewer pipes without requiring extensive digging and causing major disruptions. It’s trenchless pipe rehabilitation, and it’s an effective method of restoring most (but not all) sewer pipes. But what’s the process for sewer pipe lining in Norfolk, VA, and when will it benefit you?

Sewer Pipe Lining in Norfolk, VA: How it Works

Sewer pipe lining uses methods such as cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP), which works by inserting an epoxy-coated liner into your existing sewer pipes. The liner is flexible, so it easily fits into your sewer pipes, after which it’s inflated until it presses against the interior walls of the pipe and then hardens in place.

It creates a new pipe within the old one, and as technicians only need a single, simple access point, it can be installed without any extensive digging.

Before the sewer line installation process, the technician will conduct a thorough inspection using a specialized sewer camera. They will insert the camera into the line to check the condition of the pipes and ensure they are suitable for sewer pipe lining. They will also clean the pipes using hydro jetting.

The technician will then conduct an inspection after the installation to make sure that everything was installed correctly

When Sewer Relining in Norfolk is a Good Fit

Sewer relining is an effective way of fixing sewer lines that have suffered minor to moderate damage, including cracks, leaks, tree intrusions, and corrosion. These are the most common issues that we see at Mr. Rooter®, and they occur in homes of all sizes and pipes of all ages.

Typically, older pipes will rust and become more prone to leaks and cracks. They will deteriorate to the point that such issues become common. But they maintain their basic structure, so relining will provide the additional strength they need and can keep those lines functioning for many decades.

When You Need Alternative Damaged Sewer Pipe Repair

If your pipes are severely damaged and have lost their basic structure, trenchless pipe lining won’t be an effective method.

Bellying is a prime example. It occurs when the pipes sag, and sludge and wastewater accumulate in the sag. If pipe lining were installed in bellying pipes, the liner would just follow the sag, so it wouldn’t fix anything.

Pipe lining is also not an effective way of fixing sewer pipes that have completely collapsed or shifted. Again, as pipe lining follows the existing route, and that route is no longer properly connected, pipe lining won’t be an effective solution.

A technician will discover such issues during the initial inspection. If they find any major damage, they may recommend excavation instead of trenchless pipe lining. Excavation means they will need to dig trenches and remove or realign the existing pipe network, but while it causes more disruption in the early stages, the results can last for up to 100 years when the right materials are used.
